Pit Messel

This pit is an astonishing deposit of fossils and was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1995. The relicts of the former oil shale pit are unique.

During the industrial mining of oil shale, which laid there like a puff pastry, fossils like crocodiles, bats, frogs and the famous Messeler small primal horse were found here.

The pit can be visited accompanied by a guide and you will be impressed by the history of earth and its treasures.
